Before You Get There

Some of the photographs from a trip happen before you've arrived..

The pictures from a trip often start once you get there.

The view from the hotel. The first walk through town. The beach. The landmark everyone came to see.

But the trip started earlier.

There were bags by the door. A ride to the airport. Suitcases rolling through the terminal.

And somewhere in there, something happened.

A child skipped between her parents. Someone fell asleep at the gate. Everyone laughed when a suitcase tipped over.

These can feel like the parts between the photographs—the things happening while you're still on your way.

They're part of the trip too.

You don't need to photograph all of it. Just notice when something worth remembering happens before you've reached the place you thought you were going to photograph.
